About the Fundraiser: Beyond home and school, communities play an essential role in encouraging youth to live healthier lives. After school settings, such as after-school sports programs, empower kids to make healthy behavior changes and become advocates and leaders for healthy eating and physical activity.
This year's speaker, Damon Dunn, is an American politician, commercial real estate developer and minister, who ran track and played football at Stanford University. Dunn ultimately played in the NFL - a major victory considering where things started in his life. When Dunn was three years old his father, Texas Longhorns starting wide receiver, Mike Lockett, was killed in a car accident. Dunn grew up in a small trailer on his grandparents' farm. Hear first hand how participating in sports was a place where Dunn could see his potential through his participation in team sports because racial and socioeconomic barriers were dropped in this setting. His success in sports gave him an opportunity to immerse himself in an environment where he learned that "whatever it is you conceive, if you work hard enough, you can achieve it."
In addition to hearing from our keynote speaker, guests will enjoy music, a dinner buffet, and our silent and live auctions. Proceeds from the auction support Active4Youth's Elementary Cross Country Program. The program is free to elementary aged students in Spokane Public Schools, Central Valley Schools, and West Valley Schools. Last year, over 6,000 students participated.
